Lipid measurement and cardiovascular disease prevention: synopses of guidelines for the treatment of dyslipidemia

Abstract:

Guidelines for the treatment of dyslipidemia by several professional societies were reviewed,with emphasis on the roles of lipid measurement. Dyslipidemia, especially the increase of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, is an important risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, indentification and treatment dyslipidemia is a vital clinical practice to reduce the morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases. Guidelines for the management of dyslipidemia are developed by different professional societies internationally. The guidelines vary in some technical details, but their basic strategies for treatment are similar. The management of dyslipidemia often includes detection of dyslipidemia, assessment of cardiovascular risk, treatment, and monitoring of the treatment etc.Lipid measurement is an important component in the whole process. Reliable lipid measurement is essential for the management of dyslipidemia and for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
