Abstract:

Imported cases of Plasmodium ovale (PO) have been reported. Microscopic examination of PO is similar in shape to Plasmodium vivax, which is easily misinterpreted as Plasmodium vivax, and also an important reason for missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis of imported malaria cases. It is a new challenge for clinical laboratory diagnosis and treatment in most areas of China where malaria has been eliminated for many years. The detection techniques for PO infection mainly include thick/thin film detection, automatic hematology analyzer screening, and the application of new nested PCR techniques. In this paper, the research progress of experimental diagnostic techniques and methods of PO is reviewed.
