Abstract:
Objective To explore the effect of innovatively applying pacesetter interviews and speech contests in the teaching of job competency for clinical laboratory medicine students, and to evaluate the teaching effectiveness.
Methods From 2021 to 2022, 7 resident training physicians and 31 undergraduate interns of clinical laboratory, along with 38 medical laboratory science students in 19 groups, voluntarily signed up for a "job competency"-themed interview and speech contest featuring exemplary models in the field. The students conducted in-depth interviews with outstanding role models who excelled in medical practice, education, and research, and then produced videos and participated in the speech contest. Through questionnaires, the study aimed to compare the differences in understanding between students and practicing laboratory personnel regarding the moral, ability, diligence, and performance elements of job competency. Additionally, it sought to assess the students' level of comprehension about job competency, as well as the medical, educational, and research aspects of the laboratory department, before and after the contest. The students also self-evaluated their professional readiness.
Results Before the contest, practicing laboratory personnel had higher expectations for job competency in terms of the overall score, including ethics, performance, and abilities, compared to students (P<0.05); After the contest, students showed significant growth in their understanding of execution, learning ability, problem-solving ability, and team awareness. Additionally, there was a significant increase in understanding of various aspects of medical laboratory work (P<0.05), and an improvement in career preparation self-evaluation.
Conclusion Excellent worker interview and speech contest can enhance students' understanding of medical laboratory work, also strengthened their recognition of the job competency elements such as morality, ability, diligence, and performance. As a result, students raised their own standards, facilitating a smoother transition from being students to becoming professional laboratory technicians.
