Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the distribution characteristics of aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) gene rs671 polymorphism in the population of Guangzhou, and the correlation between ALDH2 and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Methods

A retrospective analysis was conducted on the ALDH2 genotype of individuals who underwent physical examinations and were diagnosed with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from January 2018 to June 2021. The distribution differences of ALDH2 polymorphism were compared among different gender groups, different age groups, between physical examination groups and different cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease groups.

Results

The frequencies of the GG, GA and AA genotypes of the ALDH2 gene in the enrolled population were 55.16%, 37.80% and 7.04%, respectively, consistent with the Hardy Weinberg genetic balance (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in the frequency of ALDH2 genotypes between the male and female populations (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in the frequency of ALDH2 genotypes among different age groups (P>0.05). Compared with Beijing, Shandong and Shanxi regions, this study showed statistically significant differences in the frequency of ALDH2 genotypes (P<0.05). However, compared with Jiangsu, Hunan, and Guangdong regions, there was no statistically significant difference in the frequency of ALDH2 genotypes (P>0.05). The genotype frequencies of GA and AA in the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease group were 39.09% and 9.13%, respectively, and the frequency of A allele frequency was 28.67%, which was higher than that in the physical examination groups, with statistical significance (all P<0.05). The frequency differences of ALDH2 genotypes between the control group and the coronary heart disease group, cerebral infarction group, and cerebrovascular disease group were statistically significant (all P<0.05).

Conclusion

The distribution characteristics of gene polymorphism at the ALDH2 rs671 locus in the population of Guangzhou region showed no differences in gender and age distribution, and carrying the ALDH2 A allele is more likely to suffer from cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
