Abstract:

Clinical laboratories play very important roles in medical decisions. With the use of new technologies, the precision and accuracy of tests in clinical laboratories have been improved greatly. At the same time, the turn around time in clinical laboratories decreased from days to hours. On the other hand, clinical laboratories are facing more challenges in specimen processing and report interpretation due to the complicated methodologies and increased analytes. In addition to the analysis of patient specimens, the clinical laboratories are also responsible for processing patient samples correctly and interpreting testing results accurately. The total process in a clinical laboratory includes pre-analytical,analytical,and postanalytical phases. Accumulated evidence indicated that most clinical laboratory errors are found in preanalytical and post-analytical phases. This review will discuss some details which are related to the quality of clinical laboratories and are easily ignored.

Key words: Quality management, Pre-analytical, Analytical, Post-analytical
