Investigation and analysis of basic status of clinical laboratories in medical institutions in Shanxi province

Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the basic status of clinical laboratory in various kinds of medical institutions in Shanxi province, analyze the present situation of clinical laboratory and provide reference for the further improvement of management strategy.

Methods

In 2015, Shanxi Center of Clinical Laboratories issued questionnaires of clinical laboratory quality control indicators to a total of 598 laboratories incorporated in our external quality assessment (EQA) system, The basic information were collected hospital and laboratory through internet. The basic information include: medical institution′s level and type; the number of beds; the information system construction; the total number of test items, and the proportion of automation; test items number and percentage in total income of each major (clinical blood and body fluids, clinical chemistry, immunology, microbiology); staff composition, etc. The statistical analysis of data was done by Microsoft Excel 2003.

Results

Totally 258 laboratories returned the questionnaires and the rate was 43.1%. 91.8% (45/49) of the three-level medical institution clinical Laboratory equipped with laboratory information system (LIS). 62.9% (105/167) of the secondary medical institution clinical laboratory equipped with the LIS. The total number of test items was ranged 121 (6-880), and the percentage of automation was 80.8% in 158 general hospital. The highest percentage of the total income was clinical chemistry that was about 48%, and secondly was clinical blood and body fluids that was about 25.4%. The ratio of high, medium and primary titles in department directors was 1:2:0.3, and the ratio was 1:4:7:8 in staffs. The percentage of laboratory physician was 10.3%.

Conclusions

Through the survey, the basic status of clinical laboratories in Shanxi Province is mastered. The medical institutions still need to strengthen the information system construction, set the test items reasonably, optimize the staff composition, and properly improve the ratio of the laboratory physicians.
